Wes Anderson’s The Young Person’s Guide to Life
Those of you who have seen Moonrise Kingdom, we know what you were thinking: that recording of Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra featured throughout the film sounds an awful lot like Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic.
You’re right. Recorded on March 20, 1961 and released in 1962, the original recording included narration not only in English, but also in Spanish (narrated by Bernstein’s wife, Chilean-American actress Felicia Montealegre), Hebrew, and German.
Check out a great interview on NPR’s Fresh Air about how Anderson soundtracks his movies, including his prominent use of Britten in Moonrise Kingdom.
